How do I use these guideline measurements?

Mark the measurements on both edges of your paper using a ruler and sharp pencil. Connect the marks with light horizontal lines. Alternatively, create one master guideline sheet and use it under translucent calligraphy paper.

What pencil should I use for guidelines?

Use a hard pencil (4H to 6H) with very light pressure. Hard pencils create fine lines that are easy to erase after inking. A mechanical pencil with 0.3 mm lead also works well.

Do I need to erase guidelines after writing?

For finished work, yes — gently erase with a soft eraser after the ink is completely dry (at least 30 minutes for most inks). Some calligraphers use non-photo blue pencils which do not reproduce in scanning.

What is the difference between waistline and ascender line?

The waistline marks the top of the x-height — where letters like a, e, o reach. The ascender line is above the waistline and marks the top of tall letters like b, d, h, l. The gap between them is the ascender zone.

Can I print these guidelines instead of drawing them?

How Guideline Calculation Works

X-height = Nib width x Nib width ratio

From the nib width and script-specific ratio, we calculate x-height. Ascender and descender heights are proportional to x-height (script-dependent). Guidelines repeat at the line advance interval (ascender + x-height + descender + interline gap).
