How long should hanging wire be?

The wire should span between the two D-rings with enough extra for wrapping (40 mm each end) and a small sag (about 25 mm). This sag allows adjustment on the wall hook and absorbs minor impacts.

How much should the wire sag?

About 25 mm of sag when the frame is hung is ideal. Too tight and the wire stresses the D-rings. Too loose and the wire or hook may be visible above the frame. Thread the wire, then push the centre down ~25 mm.

Should I use braided or solid wire?

Braided wire is preferred — it is more flexible, easier to work with and less likely to kink. Solid wire is cheaper but harder to thread and can snap if bent repeatedly. Braided stainless steel is the professional choice.

How do I attach wire to D-rings?

Thread the wire through the D-ring, loop back and twist tightly for 40 mm (about 10 turns). Cut excess wire and flatten the twisted end against the frame. Some framers add a dab of hot glue to secure the twist.

Where should the wall hook go?

The hook position on the wall depends on where you want the top of the frame. Measure from the top of the frame to where the wire will catch the hook (with sag). Add this to your desired frame-top height for the hook position.

The sagged span is calculated using Pythagoras: wire forms a shallow V between D-rings with 25 mm sag at the centre. Adding 40 mm wrapping allowance at each end gives the total wire needed. Wire gauge is recommended based on total frame weight.
