Displaying and Hanging Artwork
How artwork is displayed affects how it is perceived. Gallery conventions exist for good reason — consistent centre-line heights, appropriate spacing and balanced arrangements draw the viewer into the work rather than distracting from it.
The gallery wall space calculator works out optimal spacing, hanging heights and edge margins for single-row, grid and salon-style arrangements. It calculates wall utilisation so you can plan exhibitions and home gallery walls with confidence.
The standard museum centre-line height is 145cm (57 inches) from the floor, placing artwork at a comfortable viewing height for most people. Our calculator uses this as the default but allows you to adjust it for your specific space and audience.
