How Plaster Mix Calculation Works
This uses a volume-conservation method anchored on each plaster's manufacturer consistency (parts water per 100 parts plaster by weight). The poured slurry must exactly fill the cavity, so the water volume plus the dry-powder volume equals the mould volume:
Water (g) = Volume (cm³) ÷ (1 + (100 ÷ Consistency) ÷ 2.7)
Plaster (g) = Water × (100 ÷ Consistency)
The 2.7 is the solid density of plaster powder (calcium sulfate hemihydrate, g/cm³). Because the powder takes up real volume, a harder, lower-consistency plaster packs in more powder and takes less water per cm³ of cavity — so it genuinely comes out denser and stronger. Consistencies used: Plaster of Paris 67, Herculite No. 2 42, Crystacal R 35, dental stone 30.
