Manufacturers state this as a “consistency”: the parts of water per 100 parts of plaster by weight. Fine casting Plaster of Paris sits at 65-75; our calculators default to 67-70. Always sprinkle the plaster onto the water, never the reverse.

The Herculite No. 2 and Crystacal R figures are the Saint-Gobain Formula consistencies (100/42 and 100/35). Dental stones run lower still, roughly 20-30 parts water per 100 depending on type. Note the direction: the harder, denser plasters take less water, not more. Jesmonite AC100 is different again, a two-part composite mixed 2.5 : 1 base powder to AC100 liquid by weight and never gauged with plain water.
Why the Ratio Is Quoted by Weight
Always measure by weight on digital scales. Plaster powder compresses, so a scoop can hold very different amounts depending on how settled the bag is, which makes volume measurement unreliable. Water is easy: 1 ml weighs 1 g, so you can measure it in a jug and treat millilitres as grams. If you have no scales at all, the traditional fallback is the island method: sprinkle plaster evenly across the water surface until small dry islands stop sinking, then let it slake before mixing. It gets you close to the casting consistency without any measuring.
Worked Example: A 500 cm³ Mould
Our plaster mix calculator sizes the batch so the poured slurry exactly fills the cavity, splitting the mould volume between water and dry powder (powder solid density about 2.7 g/cm³). At the default consistency of 67 that gives:
- Water: 500 ÷ (1 + (100 ÷ 67) ÷ 2.7) ≈ 322 ml
- Plaster: 322 × (100 ÷ 67) ≈ 481 g
- Total mix: about 803 g for the 500 cm³ cavity
Scaled to a full litre of mould volume that is roughly 644 ml water plus 961 g plaster, about 1.6 kg of mixed plaster per litre, which matches the wet slurry density of about 1.60 g/cm³ that our plaster mixing calculator uses for Plaster of Paris. To find your cavity volume, fill the mould with water and measure it: 1 ml equals 1 cm³.
Mixing Without Lumps or Bubbles
Sprinkle the plaster evenly over the water and let it slake for 1-2 minutes without stirring. Then mix gently from the bottom with a flat tool rather than whisking, which traps air, and tap the container to bring bubbles to the surface before pouring. Plaster of Paris sets in roughly 10-25 minutes depending on the batch: warm water speeds the set, cold water slows it. Resist adding extra water to buy working time. Over-watering beyond the quoted consistency makes the cast more porous and noticeably weaker, so stick to the ratio and mix smaller batches instead.
