What wire gauge should I use for my sculpture?

For figures under 20 cm, use 1-1.5 mm wire. For 20-40 cm figures, 1.5-2 mm works well. For 40-80 cm, use 2-3 mm wire. Larger sculptures need steel rod or pipe for the main structure with wire for details.

Why is the wire length doubled?

Single wire bends too easily under clay weight. Doubling (twisting two lengths together) or tripling creates a rigid armature that holds its shape. Twist the wire tightly with pliers for best results.

Aluminium or steel wire?

Aluminium is softer, easier to bend and lighter — ideal for most sculpture armatures. Steel is stronger and holds shape better for large or heavy sculptures but is harder to work with. Copper is soft and easy to shape but more expensive.

How do I attach the armature to a base?

Drill holes in a wooden or MDF base plate and feed the leg/support wires through. Bend them flat underneath and secure with epoxy or screws. For heavy pieces, use a metal flange bolted to the base.

What about support rods?

A vertical support rod (threaded steel rod or pipe) provides the main structural support. The wire armature wraps around it. Use a floor flange bolted to the base for the strongest connection.

Total wire = figure height × type multiplier × complexity × 2 (doubled)

Human figures need approximately 5x their height in wire (spine + 2 arms + 2 legs + head + base attachments). Animals need 5.5x (4 legs + spine + tail). Abstract forms need about 4x. This is then doubled for structural strength and adjusted for pose complexity.
