What is the most common patina for bronze?

Liver of sulphur (potassium polysulphide) is the most widely used patina chemical for bronze sculpture. It produces warm brown to dark black tones depending on concentration and number of applications. It works best on heated metal and is relatively safe to handle.

How do I get a green patina on bronze?

For a green verdigris patina, use cupric nitrate or ferric nitrate solution applied to heated bronze. Alternatively, the ammonia-and-salt fuming method creates a natural-looking blue-green patina over 24–48 hours. Multiple thin applications give the most realistic results.

Do I need to seal the patina?

Yes, always seal the patina with a clear wax (Renaissance wax is the museum standard in the UK) or lacquer to prevent further oxidation and protect the finish. Apply wax to warm (not hot) metal and buff with a soft cloth. Reapply wax annually for outdoor sculptures.

Many patina chemicals are irritants or toxic. Always work in a well-ventilated area or outdoors, wear chemical-resistant gloves, eye protection and a respirator. Never heat chemicals above recommended temperatures. Keep a neutralising solution (sodium bicarbonate and water) nearby for spills.
